Driving the Future with More of Everything

It’s one of those rare chances when you get to drive next year’s model in July of the current year. Yes, I had the chance to drive the future, and I can say that the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 is one heck of a vehicle. Building on the foundation of the acclaimed iX series, this latest iteration doesn’t just refine the formula—it elevates it. From its polarizing but powerful design to a driving experience that is both exhilarating and serene, the iX xDrive60 is an impressive machine that justifies its place at the top of the luxury EV segment.

Styling: Edgy and Athletic

While the original iX design was, and remains, a conversation starter, the 2026 model embraces its distinctive character with confidence. It borrows familiar styling cues from the BMW X5 but sharpens them into a more edgy, athletic form. Finished in a striking Arctic Race Blue Metallic, the character lines are accentuated, giving the vehicle a purposeful stance.

The front end, with its larger, illuminated kidney grille, is the most controversial element, but personally speaking, I quite like it. Paired with angled and powerful LED headlights, the grille serves as a futuristic “intelligence panel” housing a suite of sensors. A particularly neat feature is the revolutionary Self-Healing Grille technology, which uses a polyurethane coating to repair minor scratches within 24 hours at room temperature, or even faster with a little warm air.

The rear is equally attractive, with a redesigned apron and integrated diffuser courtesy of the optional M Sport Package, which gives it a decidedly sporty look. Our test vehicle’s visual prowess was further enhanced by the optional 23-inch Aero wheels—yes, that’s right, 23 inches!!! This would normally suggest a compromise in ride comfort, but this is a BMW, and the ride quality remains surprisingly comfortable and composed despite the massive wheels.

Interior: A Sanctuary of “Shy Tech”

Step inside the 2026 iX, and you are greeted by a cabin that is large and comfortable; even more so, it’s comforting to the occupants. To me, it was peaceful and made me say “aahh.” Unlike some BMWs that honor classic design, the iX’s interior is a minimalist, modern statement. Simple vents and door panels with subtle controls contribute to a feeling of tranquility. The soft-close doors add to the sense of quiet luxury.

The centerpiece of this minimalist design is the immense Curved Display, which seamlessly integrates a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.9-inch main touchscreen. BMW’s updated operating system is quick and intuitive, though I found myself sometimes touching the wrong icon, especially when in motion. Fortunately, voice control is on hand to assist.

Comfort is paramount, and the M Multifunction perforated leather seats are a highlight. They are large, comfortable, and adjustable to fit any body type. The optional speakers built into the front seats provide a 4D listening experience that, while perhaps not for everyone, immerses the driver and passenger in the sound. Some people may find this to be too much or annoying; personally, I loved having a more complete listening experience. I was a little disappointed with some of the interior materials, though; yes, this is an EV, but BMW digressed to cheaper plastics, less leather, and hard materials in some areas.

Rear-seat occupants are treated to a comfortable space with a flat floor, allowing three people to sit without feeling cramped. The cargo area is generous, offering 35.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, expanding to 77.9 cubic feet when folded. The one notable drawback is the lack of a “frunk” for storing smaller items.

Driving: Blistering Performance with Poise

Driving the iX xDrive60 can be summed up in a few words: blistering, comfortable, and impressive. With 536 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque, this all-electric SAV doesn’t just launch off the line, it lurches like a coiled serpent. Your head snaps back, and your stomach just pushes into the seat as the car unleashes its power.

Thanks to a low center of gravity and dual-motor all-wheel drive, the iX feels completely planted. While there is some expected body roll from such a large heavy vehicle, the adaptive two-axle air suspension and four-wheel steering work in harmony to keep the vehicle poised, even over imperfect road surfaces. The recalibrated chassis and tuning from the previous model are evident, with a confidence-inspiring feel in the corners. I’ve found that with EVs, the ride can tend to be bumpy and rigid. The iX remains comfortable, and in a particular area in Vancouver where a road merges onto a bridge, most EVs give quite a bump. Not so in the iX xDrive60.

The four-wheel steering is a game-changer, giving the large SUV a surprisingly tight turning radius that makes navigating tight city spaces ridiculously easy. To avoid curbing those 23-inch wheels, I used the 360-degree surround camera, which offers various viewing angles.

The vehicle’s overall impressiveness extends to its advanced driver-assistance features, including adaptive braking and highway assist with Active Lane Change. While not as hands-free as some rival systems, it capably handles highway cruising and will automatically change lanes when safe, providing a layer of impressive convenience and safety. The optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround System complements the drive, offering an listening experience that truly matches the car’s dynamic capabilities.

Battery and Range: Power for the Long Haul

The 2026 iX xDrive60 features a large 113.4 kWh battery, which provides an impressive range of up to 586 km. During my real-world test, the vehicle delivered about 540 km of range, proving that traveling long distances is now easier than ever in the iX. With DC fast charging support up to 195 kW, topping up the battery is also a quick and efficient process.

Final Verdict

With a starting price of $95,900 and an as-tested price of just over $120,000, the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 is not an inexpensive vehicle. However, for a luxury EV that delivers blistering performance, increased comfort and range, and a host of advanced technologies, the price is more than justified. It remains an excellent choice in the segment, offering a compelling blend of power, poise, and futuristic design.
