plug-in hybrid full sized SUV
The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge is a great choice for car buyers looking for a three row full sized SUV. The Recharge model offers about 50km in pure EV range and takes several hours to charge. Unfortunately it is not listed on the Federal rebate website, only the smaller offerings like XC40 Recharge, XC60 Recharge and S60 Recharge are listed but I believe the XC90 Recharge still qualifies for PST exemption if you are buying used.
There is only one engine choice for XC90 Recharge and it’s top of the line T8 engine that produces combined 455hp and 523lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8 speed automatic and AWD system. The battery size is 18.8kWh capable of about 50km of pure EV range.
My week with this tester confirms that the pure EV range is indeed in the 50km range and this range is acceptable for daily commute under normal circumstances. It does require daily charging if I want to maximize the EV capability, so that’s the only annoyance of plug-in hybrid as opposed to full EV like the XC40 Recharge that gives over 300km per charge. The benefit of plug-in is the flexibility of using gas and the car will drive normally even after the battery is completely depleted.
I personally think plug-in hybrid is a good comprise between gas and EV, and serves as a smooth transition to the EV world. Another benefit of having that 18.8kWh battery is the instant power and it is ultra quick off the line for a full sized SUV.
The XC90 is loaded with luxury features like power sunshade, crystal shifter, manual sunshade in the back seats, three zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, 3 memory settings for both driver and passenger, kick to open trunk door, open pore wood trim and stitched leather in many touch points.
However, there are a few things that can be improved, such as the lack of electronically folded seats in the second row for this price point, and the second row itself is on the narrow side and there is no arm rest. There is a lack of storage in general and there is no wireless phone charger in my tester. The driver mode is also embedded in the menu instead of having its own dedicated button.
The third row seats are acceptable, having its own vent is definitely a plus and makes the ride a little more enjoyable. The third row is best reserved for small kids and emergency use. There was no isofix in third row.
The trunk with the third row up is not that useful, but it’s very large with the third row folded. One can carry up to 7’5 long items with second and third rows down.
With a price tag of $95k, the XC90 Recharge is a luxury full size SUV that is elegant and capable but is not perfect.
